Violin - Radiology Resident
What’s your connection to healthcare?
I'm a first-year radiology resident at Penn.
Why did you choose to pursue your current field?
I think radiology is an awesome field that integrates all aspects of adult and pediatric medicine. It combines advanced diagnostic capabilities, technological innovations and interdisciplinary collaboration.
What instrument(s) do you play in PMSO, and how long have you played these instrument(s)?
I've played the violin for around 20 years. Started as a kid in Colombia but have been lucky to find awesome ensembles and orchestras after I moved to the USA.
Why did you start playing your instrument(s)?
It was my grandma's dream that I played the violin one day. That's it. I can't thank her enough!
Why is music important to you?
Music helps me connect with myself and with other people. I think that the ability to make and appreciate music is one of the aspects that make us human beings. I just can't imagine a day of my life without music.
Do you think music and healthcare can complement each other in any way?
Absolutely. Music can heal people and even save lives!
Why did you get involved in PMSO?
During the pandemic, one of my mentors at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia mentioned that Penn had a medical orchestra and that I should join. I loved the idea that people from healthcare (who are thought to be super busy and not having time for hobbies) gathered to make music together.
What has your experience in PMSO been like so far?
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made after I came to Philly! Happy to see everyone in rehearsals, learn from each other and discover new music.
What is your favorite piece that you’ve performed with us? Have there been any highlights of playing with the orchestra?
Sibelius # 2 in the Fall of 2022. Especially its fourth movement.
Why should people come to the concert this year?
Because the repertoire is amazing and everyone on stage is super excited to show what we have prepared for this winter!
