Frequently Asked Questions
When and where are orchestra rehearsals?
We rehearse Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 PM.
Our Spring season typically runs January - April, while our Fall season runs August - December.
Rehearsals normally take place in Irvine Auditorium (3401 Spruce St), though we occasionally meet in Houston Hall (3417 Spruce St).
How many concerts do you perform?
We perform two concerts a year - one Spring (April) and one Winter (December). These performances take place on Irvine Main Stage (3401 Spruce St). All concerts are free to attend.
Do I have to audition?
Strings: Auditions are not required. Members are provided with the opportunity to submit an excerpt to audition for a section leader position, if interested. Requested excerpts are shared shortly before each season (typically about a month prior).
Winds / Brass: Depending on the volume of interest, we may request an excerpt to help determine participation and seating. Requested excerpts are shared shortly before each season (typically about a month prior).
Percussion: Auditions are not requested at this time.
What other programs or opportunities does the orchestra offer?
In addition to the orchestra, we have a chamber music program where we help connect musicians into smaller ensembles. These groups set their own repertoire, rehearsal schedules, and meeting locations. We offer a handful of performance opportunities for these musicians, including at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine atrium.
We also have social events throughout the year to help members connect outside of orchestra. These events are a great way to relax, have fun, and meet others who share an interest in both music and medicine.
Are there membership fees?
No, we do not have membership fees.
