Spotlight: - Ha-Neul Yu
Horn - MD candidate
What’s your connection to healthcare?
I’m a first-year medical student at Penn.
What instrument(s) do you play in PMSO, and how long have you played these instrument(s)?
I play French horn and started playing in grade 8.
Why did you start playing your instrument(s)?
My middle school music teacher encouraged me to try a brass instrument. My school offered several options—trumpet, trombone, tuba, and French horn. French horn's rich, warm sound immediately stood out to me and I have been playing since then.
Why is music important to you?
Music has always been an integral part of my life, thanks to my family's deep connection to classical music and having violinists in my family. Growing up surrounded by musicians, I learned early on how powerful music can be, as a form of expression and as a shared experience.
Do you think music and healthcare can complement each other in any way?
Yes! What I love in both music and healthcare is the collaborative process. Whether playing a supporting role to enhance a melody or taking the spotlight with a solo, it’s the balance of listening, leading, and following that makes music come alive and connects me to both the sound and the people around me. Similarly, in healthcare, this same dynamic of collaboration creates an environment that’s built on a foundation of empathy, teamwork, and connection.
Why did you get involved in PMSO?
I wanted to keep playing my instrument, and when I discovered PMSO at Penn, it felt like the perfect fit. Playing in orchestras, brass ensembles, and trios has always been a great way for me to unwind and enjoy my hobby. The opportunity to continue making music during medical school seemed like the ideal way to balance my academic pursuits with something I love.
What has your experience in PMSO been like so far?
It’s been amazing! One of the things I love about PMSO is the diversity of backgrounds of musicians. From medical students and physicians to researchers, and professionals across various healthcare fields in Philly—it’s incredible to connect with so many people outside my usual circle.
